Leading Through Brain Fog: Strategies to Stay Focused and Effective

Simple habits and tools to help you maintain clarity and energy

Have you ever been in a meeting and completely gone blank? You’re mid-sentence and suddenly the words don’t come or they come out in a long ramble, and you lose your train of thought. Or worse, you can’t even remember a client's name.

I’ve been there and it can be destabilizing. From forgetting basic words like implementing in a presentation, to completely blanking on whether a meeting was even scheduled, to asking myself, “Did that conversation even happen?”... brain fog has a way of sneaking in at the most inconvenient times.

For me, it wasn’t just embarrassing. It was stressful for me and my team. One day, my company president was absolutely befuddled that I could not for the life of me remember a discussion we had the previous week. He was bewildered and I had to tell him that it was a symptom of perimenopause. Thankfully, I have a very understanding and thoughtful boss, with whom I can have these types of conversations… But it still was uncomfortable at the time and I was anxious he would think that I wasn’t taking my work seriously. He was relieved that I opened up to him, as he was getting more and more worried I had early onset Alzheimer’s… no joke.

If you’re a midlife woman leader, chances are you’ve felt this too. Long hours, disrupted sleep, endless multitasking, and the invisible load of leadership can make your brain feel like it’s running through molasses. The result? Moments of fog that leave you feeling diminished, scattered, or even panicked.

But here’s the truth: brain fog doesn’t have to stop you from leading effectively. It doesn’t mean you’re failing or losing your edge. It happens to countless women in leadership, especially in midlife.

That’s why I created the Brain Fog Toolkit - a simple, practical toolkit to help you regain focus, clarity, and confidence in just a few minutes. Inside, you’ll find:

  • Know Your Fog Tracker – spot patterns so you can stay ahead of the fog.

  • Rise & Shine Morning Ritual – a short, routine to set the tone for a clear day.

  • Reset & Rescue Strategies – quick rescue tips when brain fog hits mid-meeting or mid-task.

  • Leadership Edge Habits – how to protect your energy and stay sharp as a midlife leader.

  • Energy Drains Checklist – your quick reminder to reclaim your focus.

  • Your Sanctuary Guide – create a workspace that grounds you and fuels clear thinking.

Whether it’s anchoring yourself before speaking, delegating tasks strategically, or asking for your team’s help when needed, these techniques are designed to help you lead with clarity and confidence - no matter when the dreaded fog shows up.

Forgetting a word, a name, or even a meeting doesn’t define your leadership. What defines your leadership is how you show up in spite of it.

Click here to download the Brain Fog Toolkit and take the first step toward leading with clarity, focus, and calm, even on your foggiest days.
