How Menopause Can Affect Your Career

A Look at the Significant Effects Menopausal Symptoms Can Have on Women’s Careers

A 2023 study published in Occupational Medicine highlights the significant effects menopausal symptoms can have on women’s work performance, career decisions, and overall well-being in the workplace. The research surveyed 407 female employees at a large Irish hospital, most of whom were between the ages of 45 and 64, a group that is increasingly prominent in today’s workforce.

Key findings

  • Most common symptoms

The symptoms reported most frequently as affecting work included fatigue (54%), difficulty sleeping (47%), poor concentration (44%), and poor memory (40%). Hot flushes and night sweats were also notable, especially among older respondents.

  • Impact on work

65% of respondents said menopausal symptoms affected their work performance, while 18% had taken sick leave due to symptoms. Additionally, 8% reduced their hours, 7% changed roles, and 6% stopped working night shifts. A small percentage (2%) left their jobs entirely.

  • Career development

35% reported that menopausal symptoms had influenced their career development decisions. The study found a strong link between symptom severity and negative impacts on work performance, attendance, and even career choices.

  • The importance of workplace support

Manager awareness about menopause and flexible working hours were ranked as the most valuable workplace supports (each by 29% of respondents). Temperature and ventilation control, as well as access to information about menopause, were also highlighted as important.

What This Means for Midlife Women Leaders

These findings underscore the reality that menopausal symptoms - especially fatigue, sleep issues, and cognitive difficulties - can significantly affect women’s ability to perform at work and pursue career growth. The study also emphasizes the importance of supportive workplace policies, including manager training and flexible scheduling, to help women navigate this transition successfully.

For midlife women leaders, understanding these challenges and advocating for supportive environments can make a meaningful difference - not just for themselves, but for all women in the workplace.
