If you’re a woman in your 40s or 50s, you have surely noticed and felt the pressures of life’s demands. They haven’t slowed down, but have picked up speed…fast. Between advancing your career, supporting your family, and managing your own well-being (does eating protein, practicing self care and balancing hormones feel like a full-time job?!), it can feel like you’re juggling more than ever. Add in the physical and emotional changes of perimenopause, and it’s no wonder so many women describe midlife as both a crossroads and a crucible. Fabulous 40s feel like an unattainable dream…
The overlooked impact of perimenopause on leaders
For many women, perimenopause brings significant shifts in mood, memory, and energy. These changes affect how you show up at work, how you manage stress, and even how you see yourself as a leader. I know I have felt like a poor leader - between sleepless nights, caring for my aging parents, my motivation was down in the pits and procrastination felt like the new normal. Never mind the brain fog that shook my confidence…
Cognitive changes, emotional fluctuations and debilitating physical symptoms make it hard, if not impossible, to stay resilient under pressure, navigate a constantly evolving workplace and stay focused on career goals.
Because these symptoms are often invisible, many women struggle in silence, feeling isolated or even questioning their competence. I know I have felt this over and over in the past few years.
On top of hormonal changes, midlife often brings about new family responsibilities and dynamics. You might be caring for aging parents, supporting children through major transitions, or both, all while maintaining your professional momentum. This “sandwich generation” stress can leave you feeling stretched thin, anxious and overwhelmed.
Leadership in midlife: unique challenges women face
It’s easy to focus on what feels hard right now, but midlife also brings a wealth of strengths: experience, perspective, and resilience. The challenge is learning how to tap into these strengths, even as you navigate new obstacles.
Common midlife leadership challenges
Self-doubt or imposter syndrome, especially when symptoms impact performance
Difficulty balancing personal needs with professional and family responsibilities
Feeling “stuck” or uncertain about your next chapter
There is some good news: these challenges can be catalysts for growth and renewal. And the answer isn't to “power through.” Here are some steps you can take to support yourself as a leader in midlife:
Acknowledge what’s happening
Stop the madness for a few moments! Take a moment, breathe, and give yourself permission to recognize and name the changes you’re experiencing. You’re not imagining things, and you’re not alone.
Prioritize self-care and sleep
Self-care isn’t selfish, it’s essential. Establishing a routine that includes small acts, like taking a walk, practicing mindfulness, or setting boundaries around your time, can make a big difference. But mostly, prioritize sleep. For years, I was stuck in a vicious cycle of anxious, sleepless nights. When I finally found the right formula that allowed me to get restful sleep, I felt like myself again. It involved a lot of researching, trying different routines and supplements, and talking to my health care practitioner.
Connect with peers
Sharing your experiences with other women who “get it” can be profoundly validating and energizing. Consider joining a group or community focused on midlife leadership.
Invest in your growth
Midlife is a powerful time for reflection and reinvention. Leadership coaching, especially programs designed for women in this stage, can help you rediscover your strengths, set new goals, and move forward with confidence. It can help give you back that spark that’s hidden underneath all of those challenges you are currently juggling.
